Recruitment

Bond Demolition operatives demolish and dismantle structures safely and are always looking for new staff with the right experience.  You need to be over 18 to train as a demolition operative.

As a minimum you should have previously worked in a job that involved putting up fences and scaffolding, and clearing sites. You should also be familiar with using power and hand tools in your work.

Work Activities

Demolition operatives demolish and dismantle buildings and other structures. All demolition is planned and operatives work to a structured programme. The work involves assessing the structure and preparing the site to make sure it can be demolished safely. This includes putting up fences and scaffolding. They then clear the site.

Materials are often removed and recycled for future use. All operatives sort and grade any bricks or timbers that can be recycled.

Some trained workers, have extra duties such as removing asbestos or cutting steel girders using special cutting equipment. Other tasks include stripping roofs, floors and fittings, removing doors and windows and demolishing roof structures.

Demolition operatives use chisels, crowbars and axes to demolish stone or brick walls. They also use machinery such as pneumatic drills, chain saws and, in some cases, explosives.

Demolition work is potentially hazardous so demolition operatives must wear basic safety equipment such as protective footwear, goggles, gloves, respirators and ear defenders.

Personal Qualities and Skills

As a demolition operative you must follow safety regulations as the work can be dangerous. You must be reliable and practical as all work has to be carefully planned. Teamwork is also important.

The work is physically demanding and can involve a lot of lifting and working at heights. You should have good eyesight and hearing, and you should not be allergic to dust.

Pay and Opportunities

The pay rates given below are approximate.

Demolition operatives earn in the range of £260 - £290 a week, rising to £330 - £400. Top earners can make around £490 a week.

Demolition operatives work a 39-hour week. Overtime, including Saturday working may be available.

To become a skilled demolition operative you need to train by doing the Demolition Operatives Scheme. Training is a combination of on-the-job training and day- or block-release at a recognised training centre.

SVQs in Demolition are available at levels 2/3.

Qualifications

Entry requirements vary. You do not always need qualifications to enter this work.

To follow a training programme approved by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) it is useful to have a good general education including Standard Grades in English, Maths and Technology.  However, no qualifications are necessary and, if accepted, full support is given.  The CITB also sets an entrance test.

Most adults who enter this type of work have previous experience in the construction industry. Related experience, for example, as a building operative, is useful.
